Public measure IM fails – no rural LOSST revenue for courthouse HVAC system
Greene County stayed solidly red, with Republicans carrying every partisan race in the 2024 general election.
Republican John Muir, having served 18 years on the board of supervisors, was returned to the board for another term, outpacing challenger Democrat Victoria Riley in District 4. Muir received 3,231 votes (71.01 percent) to Riley’s 1,314 (28.88 percent). With no incumbent on the ballot, Republican Joe Gannon was elected as the District 1 supervisor, receiving 2,774 votes (59.91 percent) to Democrat Greg Ruth’s 1,851 votes (39.98 percent). With no challenger, Republican Pete Bardole was elected for another term for District 5, receiving 3,633 votes (98.46 percent).
In the race for county sheriff, Republican incumbent Jack Williams was re-elected with 2,797 votes (60.12 percent). Challenger Shane Monthei, running as an independent, received 1,847 votes (39.7 percent).
The Trump/Vance presidential ticket received 3,210 votes (65.84 percent) while the Harris/Walz ticket received 1,599 votes (32.8 percent). Incumbent Republican US Representative Zach Nunn received 3,030 votes (65.19 percent). Challenger Democrat Lanon Baccam received 1,608 votes (34.60 percent).
Republican incumbents carried the county in statehouse races as well. Incumbent state senator for District 24 Jesse Green received 3,086 votes (68.23 percent). Democrat Margaret Liston received 1,432 votes (31.66 percent). In state House District 47, incumbent Carter Nordman received 2,855 votes (66.89 percent). Challenger Joe Shelly received 1,408 votes (32.99 percent).
Public Measure IM was turned down, with 877 NO votes (62.82 percent) and 519 YES votes (37.18 percent). The measure appeared on ballots in the unincorporated portions of the county only. The measure would have changed the wording in the purpose statement for the local option sales and service tax to allow use for “any lawful purpose.” The change would have allowed revenues from the LOSST to be used to repay bonds for the HVAC system at the courthouse. The supervisors have stated that if LOSST revenue cannot be used for the HVAC system, the general property tax levy will be increased for all county property owners.
